What Does It Mean To Belong?

Blogging about my writing group, and being part of a community of writers has made me think about what it means to belong. Clearly, we humans are a social breed. We’re stronger together, yet there are still those who will try to convince us that true strength comes from working alone. Why is that?

Perhaps the biggest battle we face these days concerns the conflict between the need to belong, and the equally strong desire for personal identity.

It’s this battle that is the central theme to my work in progress, “Eva’s Story”.

Eva is an emotional and musically talented Welsh teenager who grows up in a community where everyone lives in each other’s pockets, and knows everyone else’s business. She’s about to set off for a new life at university, and this means huge changes for her.

I’ve been thinking lately about how I can introduce her to my blog. Over the next few weeks I’ll introduce her to you by discussing the things that matter to her the most. These include:

Creative Identity

What it means to be Welsh

First of all, I’ll be letting her introduce herself to you on this blog on Sunday. It’s going to be fun!

Thanks for reading. As always, I’d love to read your thoughts on my plan 🙂

Sounds like fun! It’s kind of funny how, though we writers have a solitary job, we do tend to flock together. I’ve found WordPress invaluable for meeting people like me. I look forward to reading about your characters. 🙂

You boldly pick your Battles. I hope you aren’t bothered by the Bantering coming from my Ballpoint, but I’m Bamboozled by other approaches. They are plain Batty, lugging around extra Baggage, Bamming at their hips. Need a Barrelful of cheap tricks and Bawdiness to Badger the reader with. What about this and what about that? Blah blah Bah Bah Baa! You’ve decided to focus on something important. Take that moral journey and don’t let any Bleeting Banshees with Baneful Babblings like a Baa! Baa! Baa!—Excuse me!—Bandit Backslapping a Banker Ban you from your Basic right to pursue a righteous cause. I hope you don’t mind my being a little Sheepish with them. I’ll get off my Bandstand, which I’m sure is far from the Bandwagon, as long as my Bandwidth will support it. Love the Backdrop image and the Baby sheep, by the way.
I’m so excited for you! I could do Backflips off a Backboard!
